LSC is pleased to welcome back Chris McCoy as director for the second time in Leawood. We welcome Todd Burd as musical director. McCoy’s vision sets Guys & Dolls in Damon Runyon’s mythical New York City of the 1930s.
Guys & Dolls is often called “Broadway’s perfect musical”. The Leawood Stage Company will celebrate the Tony-award winner’s 60th Anniversary of its debut on Broadway with this free production to be performed July 15, 16, 17, 18, & 22, 23, 24, at the Ironwoods Amphitheater in Ironwoods Park.

Additional opportunities for staff, volunteers and orchestra members are available. For more information go to the LSC website at www.leawoodstageco.org or contact April Bishop at the City of Leawood, 913-339-6700 x157, or Email stageco@leawood.org.

Performance

The Leawood Stage Company will for the very first time present a unique concert style production in the Oak Room of Leawood City Hall this October. LSC will present a Broadway style musical as a concert to be read and sung. The show, SHE LOVES MEis based on Parfumerie by Miklos Laszlo. Book by Joe Masteroff, music by Jerry Bock, and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick. SHE LOVES ME is considered by many to be the most charming musical ever written.

Adaptions of Parfumerie spawned this musical and three films; The Shop Around the Corner in 1940 starring Margaret Sullivan and James Stewart, s musical version In the Good Old Summer Time in 1949 starring Judy Garland and Van Johnson, and most recently in 1998 You’ve Got Mail starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks.

Synopsis

The synopsis of the show is as follows: Georg and Amalia are two feuding clerks in a European parfumerie during the 1930s who secretly find solace in their anonymous romantic pen pals, little knowing their respective correspondents are none other than each other. Funny, intelligent, honest and sentimental, SHE LOVES ME is a warm romantic comedy with an endearing innocence and a touch of old world elegance and nostalgia, yet as universal and relevant as ever in this age of internet romances.

After check-in, the afternoon is free to explore Times Square, have lunch at the Oyster Bar at Grand Central, or just relax in the inviting Algonquin lobby. Tonight, everyone meet in the hotel lobby. We will walk together to Times Square for dinner with wine at THE VIEW, New York City’s only revolving rooftop restaurant. From 47 floors up “the view” of the Manhattan skyline is breathtaking.
After dinner we have prime seats for a performance of JERSEY BOYS, winner of 5 Tony Awards, and still one of the hottest shows on Broadway. This popular show is the story of the legendary Four Seasons. After the show you are free to explore the nightlife of Times Square or return to the hotel. There’s nothing in New York like the Algonquin lobby for getting together after theatre for some celebrity watching.
Spend five days, four nights in the Big Apple with The Leawood Stage Company! Have the best seats to the hottest shows on Broadway, with a nice blend of group activities and things to do on your own. This trip is sure to be unforgettable, so don’t wait! Make your reservations today as the trip will be full soon!

Thursday, Sept. 24: This morning we will board a private coach with a our guide Chad Gerlt and our eccentric New York tour guide, Jane Marx. Jane has had mul-tiple TV appearances, including Late Night with David Letterman. We’ll learn about the history of Broadway, visit Central Park, Lincoln Center, Greenwich Village, Brooklyn Bridge, Wall Street, and Battery Park. The tour will make several stops during our trip for a closer look at key points in Manhattan including the site of the World Trade Center.
The tour concludes at the Snapple Theatre on Broadway, where we will a meet some special Broadway guests. We’ll have a piano ready and our entertainment will regale us with some B’way stories and sing us a few songs. The remainder of the afternoon is free.
Tonight, we have tickets to BILLY ELLIOT. Based on the movie of the same name, this is the hottest show on Broadway right now, and the show has terrific music written by Elton John. Billy Elliot is the story of a boy who wants to be a ballet dancer, even though his father wants him to box.

Friday, Sept. 25: The entire day is free for you to enjoy as you please. As an option, enjoy Autumn in New York as Chad will be guiding a walking tour for a closer look at Central Park. Or, you may join Liz for a Fifth Avenue shopping spree. Tonight you’re on your own. However, Chad will be happy to help you make plans or arrange tickets for you. Perhaps you’d like to enjoy a cabaret show at the Algonquin’s world-famous Oak Room, or experi-ence the jazz scene at The Birdland. How about another Broadway show?

Saturday, Sept. 26: The day is free for you to explore New York on your own. Your guides, Chad and Liz will be available to assist you in planning your day or getting tickets to a Saturday matinee performance if you need help (see registration form).
Tonight, we’ll celebrate our time together with dinner and cocktails aboard the World Yacht. With a two-level dining room, spacious outdoor sundeck, music, danc-ing, and dazzling views of the most famous skyline in the world, the evening will be a night to remember. Trans-portation to and from the pier will be provided.

Sunday, Sept. 27: Spend a quiet, leisurely Sunday morning in New York. Perhaps you’d like to go to mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral? We’ll check out of the hotel by noon, making a couple stops on our bus trip to the airport. First we’ll stop by Zabar’s, the famous NY deli landmark at 80th & Broadway. This is an opportunity to eat lunch, and take home a pound of pastrami and a bag of bagels – the ultimate NYC experience.
Finally, we will have a brief visit to see the amazing architecture of The Cathedral of St. John the Divine. You won’t believe your eyes as it is the 2nd largest cathedral in the world, and is almost exactly two football fields in length (601 feet). From there, the bus departs to LaGuardia in plenty of time for our Midwest Airlines non-stop flight to Kansas City.

HISTORY

Brigadoon is a musical by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Lowe, first produced in 1947. It tells the story of a mysterious village in Scotland, which appears for only one day every hundred years. Far from being a curse, the enchantment is viewed by the villagers as a blessing. According to their covenant with God, no one from Brigadoon may ever leave the village, or the enchantment will be broken and Brigadoon and all its inhabitants will disappear into the mist forever. Two American tourists, lost in the Highlands, stumble upon the village just as a wedding is about to be celebrated, and their arrival has serious implications for the village’s inhabitants.

The original Broadway production, directed by Robert Lewis and produced by Cheryl Crawford, opened March 13th, 1947. It starred David Brooks as Tommy, Marion Bell as Fiona, Lee Sullivan as Charlie, James Mitchell as Harry, and Pamela Britton as Meg. It ran for 581 performances and shared a Tony Award for Agnes De Mille’s choreography. It also won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, and has had many well-received revivals over the years.

A film version of Brigadoon, directed by Vincente Minnelli, was released by MGM in 1954 with Gene Kelly, Van Johnson and Cyd Charisse in leading roles. Four of the show’s musical numbers (“Come to Me, Bend to Me”, “There But For You Go I”, “From This Day On”, and “The Sword Dance”) were filmed and recorded, but cut prior to the film’s release. The Breen office refused to allow the use of the two songs the Meg Brockie character sang in the stage version (“The Love of My Life” and “My Mother’s Wedding Day”), as the lyrics were considered too risqué for general audiences. With the omission of these songs, the supporting role of Meg Brockie was reduced in the film to scarcely more than a bit part. The minor song “Jeannie’s Packin’ Up” was also omitted. Some of this was done because, after listening to Gene Kelly’s pre-recordings of “There But For You Go I” and “From This Day On”, the makers of the film felt that the results did not show his voice to its best advantage, but some was done because producer Arthur Freed wanted to shape the two-and-a-half hour stage musical into a film that ran 108 minutes.

A 1966 television version, shown as a color special on the ABC television network, made use of a modernized, abbreviated script that accommodated much more of the score than the film version had, yet the entire production ran only ninety minutes (counting commercials). In this production, Tommy and Jeff were participating in an auto race when their car stalled just outside of Brigadoon. This version starred Robert Goulet as Tommy, Peter Falk as Jeff, and Sally Ann Howes as Fiona, with Finlay Currie in one of his last roles as Mr. Lundie, Edward Villella as Harry, and Marlyn Mason as Meg. It won several Emmy awards, while the film version won no Academy Awards. “My Mother’s Wedding Day” was restored to this version, with all its so-called risqué lyrics. The only songs omitted from this version were “Once in the Highlands”, “Jeannie’s Packin’ Up”, and “The Love of My Life”.

Lerner’s story was based on a much older German story by Friedrich Gerstacker about the mythical, German village of Germelshausen that fell under an evil, magic curse. In 1947, memories of the second World War were too fresh to present a German-themed musical on Broadway, so Lerner reimagined the story in Scotland, complete with tartan kilts, bonnie lassies, droning bagpipes, Highland flings and “Heather on the Hill”. Lerner’s name for his imaginary locale was probably based on a well-known Scottish landmark, the Brig o’ Doon (Bridge of Doon), in Alloway, Scotland, in the heart of Robert Burns country. According to Burns’ poem Tam o’Shanter, this 13 century stone bridge is where the legendary Tam o’ Shanter fled on his horse Meg in order to escape from three witches who were chasing him. Other sources suggest that “Brigadoon” was constructed from the Gaelic words: briga which means “strife”, and dùn which means “hill, hill fort, or hill village.” The name may also be a reference to the Celtic Goddess Brigid, as in “Brigid’s Hill.” See also Alloway for another interpretation. In Scots “brig” means “bridge”. It could also be a corrupted Scots-English spelling of “Break of Dawn”, which, given the village’s state of existence, seems to make the most sense.
